Evan Jowers (JD, Boston U. ’01) is based in Hong Kong and is a co-founder of our company. He has had extraordinary success in big law recruiting, particularly in Asia, having made over 400 US attorney big law placements in Asia since 2006. His focus is moving US associates, counsel and partners to Asia and within Asia, with particular emphasis on Hong Kong / China. Evan has represented and career advised the majority of the recently promoted or entry level laterally hired US partners, over the past few years, at the top tier US firms in Hong Kong / China. Most of these attorneys Evan has had relationships with since their junior to mid-level associate years, and in some cases all the way back to their law school studies.

Evan has placed, at their current firms, partners at numerous top US and UK firms in Hong Kong / China, including for example eight current partners at Latham. Other firms where Evan has placed current partners at their current firms include: Cleary, Simpson Thacher, Ropes & Gray, Gibson Dunn, Kirkland & Ellis, Linklaters, Allen Overy, DLA Piper, Gunderson, Weil Gotshal, White & Case, and Baker McKenzie, among others. Law Dragon has recognized Evan as one of the top 20 attorney recruiters in the world. He has been interviewed by numerous major media outlets for his insight on Asia big law, such as New York Times, Legal Week, American Lawyer, Asia Counsel, California Lawyer, and CNBC, among many others. For example, Evan was the only attorney recruiter contact for the New York Times back in 2008 regarding the alarming trend then of legal talent leaving the US for Asia during the global recession. Evan created and put up the original investment for the Asia Chronicles series blog featured at Abovethelaw.com (from 2008 to 2012 was regularly read by most of US to Asia associate movers, as well as the majority of US based big law attorneys at the time).

Evan has for a number of years been invited by Harvard Law School to participate in their “Ask the Experts” program as their expert on the Asia markets (Harvard added a second Asia expert in 2018 – our Alejandro Vargas). He often advises JD programs and their law students on their potential future Asia careers. Evan regularly meets with senior partners of major US and UK law firms in Asia, as he has for more than a decade been a key go-to source of market info for them. Evan has helped a number of firms build new practices and offices in the Asia markets. Credit is given by many in the industry to Evan for playing a role in the bringing about for the first time a proper structure for big law US attorney recruiting in Hong Kong / China during 2007 to 2010. During those years he also helped a number of top US and UK firms draft up for the first time or revise their expat / cola policies, most of which have not changed much since then.

Evan has been recruiting since ’03 and with a focus on Asia since ’06. He  has made placements at most of the major US and UK law firms in Asia, in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul, and Singapore. He has also made in-house placements in various banks, companies and funds in Asia, with a particular focus at senior Asia GC type levels. Outside of Asia, Evan has also made many placements, including in London, Dubai, Moscow, Sydney, and the following US markets: New York, San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, West Palm Beach, Chicago, Boston, Denver, Boulder, New Orleans, Washington DC, Atlanta, Northern Virginia, and Charlotte. Prior to his recruiting career, Evan worked as an associate at Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft’s New York offices. He later served as global general counsel for an international garment manufacturing company, based in Miami, with a number of factories in Russia and Ukraine, with over 3000 employees.

Evan received his JD from Boston University School of Law and completed part of his law degree abroad at Oxford. He completed his undergraduate studies at University of Florida and is a former US Marine, where he served as a Russian Linguist. Evan lives most of the year in Hong Kong, but he and his wife also have homes in Miami and Jurmala, Latvia. They also have a small travel related start up business on the island of St. Barth’s, where they spend a lot of their holiday time. Evan was born in Singapore and grew up mostly in New Orleans and other parts of south Louisiana. He is a die hard Saints fan who will fly in from Asia for playoff games.
